The Producer

Domaine Jaboulet produces some of the world's greatest wines with Hermitage La Chapelle being its most famous. For many years it was run by Gérard Jaboulet, one of the great ambassadors for Rhône wines. He died suddenly in 1997 and the firm was then run by Philippe & Jacques Jaboulet. Jaboulet produces wine from 26 different appellations in the Rhône. Hermitage La Chapelle is named after the small hermit's Chapel built in 1235 on the Hermitage hill, and rivals Bordeaux 1st Growths for its incredible array of flavours - fruity and enticing when young but acquiring complex leathery and gamey overtones with age.

Acclaim

Totally thick and black, just showing the beginnings of maturity at the rim. Marvellous, almost "Burgundian" rich nose, like deep layered vegetation. Superb projection. Cinnamon toast. Pure liquorice on the palate. Lovely richness, with drier tannins underpinning. Roasted aspects. Rich plums. Great wine in a very one-off genre. Black liquorice and leather finish. Another bottle, at 17 years old, was all smoky cassis on the nose, with a great blackcurrant and liquorice taste. Sumptuous stuff and more concentration than the 1990. Rich black cherries. Serena Sutcliffe, MW WA 91
