THE 2003 VINTAGE SEES THE 31ST CONSECUTIVE RELEASE OF BLACK LABEL, OUR ICONIC FLAGSHIP AND THE FIRST ULTRA-PREMIUM WINE MADE BY WOLF BLASS WITH THE AIM TO CREATE THE FINEST RED BLEND FROM THE VINTAGE.
The philosophy behind Black Label is simple: to take the year’s very best wines and weave them together into a synergistic whole, the resultant wine being greater than the sum of its parts. It’s about creating a wine with many layers of flavour in a complex composition of intense fruit characters, magnificent structure, a rich lustrous texture, long velvety tannins and a lingering palate.
Fruit for Black Label is chosen solely on the basis of its intensity of flavour and potential for longevity. The individual vineyard batches were de-stemmed and crushed before fermentation on skins for 5 to 7 days, allowing for optimum release of flavour, colour and tannins. Pressed at low baumé, Black Label completed fermentation in new and seasoned French and American oak prior to being racked and returned to the same barrels for a further 24 months oak maturation.
Deep, purple-red in colour
Intense, lifted blackcurrant and plum fruit, layered with underlying notes of coffee and dark chocolate, with hints of mint.
Dense and plush, with dark berry, plum and dark chocolate flavours integrated with smoky oak. The wine shows exceptional complexity and balance, full, rich and opulent, yet fine and elegant, with a persistence of flavour and supple, chocolatey tannins. Finishes long with plenty of sweet fruit.
2003 experienced warm conditions and minimal rainfall, prompting an early vintage, with the weather becoming milder later in the season. The conditions were ideal for optimum ripeness, flavour, structure and depth. Fruit ripened evenly, condensing the length of the vintage. Red varieties displayed good, dense colour, excellent varietal characters and soft ripe tannins.
The wine completed fermentation in 70% new and 30% seasoned French and American oak, then continued maturation for 24 months in the same barrels.
