The Herdade do Esporão estate was established in 1267 and the property has been owned by the Roquette family since 1973. Their first wine was bottled in 1985. The winery is keen to preserve tradition while seeking to combine this with innovation. Production is overseen by the well respected and highly respected winemaker David Baverstock. His philosophy is to create authentic and exciting wines, taking full advantage of Portuguese heritage.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet is subtle with notes of citrus fruits & stone fruits. Dry well balanced with good texture & a pleasant mouth-watering finish.

Vineyard and Viticulture

Grapes are from vineyards consisting predominantly of granite schist and clay loam soil. The average yields throughout the vineyards are 50 hl/ha, with drip feed irrigation used when necessary during dry months. The grapes are harvested by hand and machine between August and October.

Vinification

Grapes are destemmed and crushed before being pressed using a membrane press. Fermentation using cultured yeasts lasted for 15 days at 15°C in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then racked off its lees, fined, filtered and bottled early to retain freshness and aromatics.
