A defibrillating slap of Semillon sends this Chenin mothership into hyperdrive – the secret spine of this mineral thing – it's ALIVE! A wine to reflect the role of Chenin Blanc in South Africa. Chenin’s versatility of style thrives in the Cape and is a natural blackboard for the region’s terroir. The name ‘On Reflection’ is intended to capture this particular, classic style as a portrait of the cultivar in the Coastal Region. Spoilt for choice having blended and tasted numerous possibilities for this wine, it was also upon reflection we realised our preferred style was that of a Paarl Chenin Blanc blended with a small portion of Semillon from ancient Franschhoek vines. We were looking for a little flesh and masses of texture, finesse and generosity hand-in-hand. It is intended to be a wine to savour, upon which to reflect on why Chenin Blanc has meant so much to style and reputation in the Cape.
A timeless style of Coastal Chenin intended to reflect why this cultivar works so well is South Africa. Bright affirmative Chenin Blanc from Paarl’s older bush vines is lifted further by 10% Semillon from ancient vines in Franschhoek. These combine for a rich, punchy, textural attack that mellows to a wealth of stone fruits, citrus and a touch of lime leaf from the Semillon on the finish. Tangy, rich and super positive.
A wine made from predominately Chenin Blanc with a blob of Semillon added for good measure. The Chenin Blanc is hand-harvested from vines planted in Paarl in 1977 and has all the hallmarks of the most abundant grape variety planted in South Africa’s oldest wine region. These dry-grown, unirrigated old bush-vines are grown on deep sandy soils over loam and granite which enables the roots to source the water table provided by Paarl mountain’s catchment of the moisture-laden ‘tablecloth’ clouds of the Cape. A high-quality Chenin Blanc in its own right, we have added some zest in the form of ancient vine, limey Semillon (10%) from Franschhoek to the final blend which raised it to another level. This contemporary blend of traditional SA cultivars from two different wine-growing areas also classifies the wine as W.O. Coastal Region.
Boutinot South Africa is driven by our passion for discovery and desire to capture the real essence of South Africa in every bottle. It was the simple love of Loire Chenin Blanc that first led us to South Africa in 1994, where we pioneered the wild ferment style that has now been adopted by many producers in this region.
Since then we have been exploring the country's amazing vineyards to make fabulous wines from specific sites and plots that scream location, location, terroir. Our home-grown South African winemaking team of JD Rossouw, Ryno Booysen and Pierre Louw drive the energy and enthusiasm for expressing the loveliest wines from their country, along with Samantha Bailey's expertise in finesse. The key is knowing the characteristics of each plot, understanding the benefits each cultivar can bring, breaking rules and pushing boundaries. We use a combination of knowledge, a love of nature and science to create versatile, expressive and food-friendly wines from a country that has been making wine for 360 years.
