Tasting Notes
Colour
Cherry-red with tints of ruby.
Nose
Aromas of red fruit, liquorice and balsamic aromas. Accompanied by subtle oak aging notes of vanilla and cocoa.
Palate
Balanced, well integrated acidity, intense primary flavours of red fruit, balsamic and spicy notes, soft tannins and subtle toast notes.
Production
The grapes come from selected vineyards with an average age of 20 years. The roots of the wine have grown deep in the chalky clay soil, which allows slow ripening and conceives persistence and depth.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a maximum temperature of 26Co. Subsequently, the wine is aged in barrels for 12 months. Although Rioja Santiago is fully suitable for long ageing, it is already in optimum conditions for consumption.
By reducing the aging in semi-new American oak barrels, the fruity primary aromas take on greater prominence. The result of the reduced tannin infusion is a smoother, easier-to-drink wine.
History
Bodegas Rioja Santiago hosts and serves wine to millions of pilgrims as they pass through Rioja, on their final stage to Santiago de Compostela.
Founded in 1870 in Haro, on the banks of the River Tiron, Bodega Rioja Santiago is the fourth oldest winery in La Rioja. One of only five wineries permitted to use the word ‘Rioja’ on the label.
Nowadays Rioja Santiago is a modern winery, but the philosophy that surrounded the wines for more than 100 years has not changed: producing the highest quality Rioja wines.
