Introducing Ronchi Di Manzano

I attended a POST WIMBLEDON Wine Trade forum recently, where I, and my fellow panellists, were asked what wines we would recommend for summer drinking – we collectively looked to the rain soaked sky, and in unison said, "REALLY??!!"

We had been pre-warned of this question, so I was reasonably self-assured in my response. I decided to talk about a range that I had been introduced to and tasted earlier this month.

That range is the Ronchi di Manzano wines which are currently on our website under ‘New Arrivals’.

Ronchi di Manzano is a 60 hectare (pretty small) estate in the municipality of Manzano, part of the DOC of Collio Orientali del Friuli, in the wine region of Friuli-Venezia-Guilia in north-east Italy.

This estate falls into my supply category of being a ‘female-led’ winery as all vineyard and winery work is undertaken by owner Roberta and her 2 daughters, Lisa & Nicole. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the attention to detail is impressive – which works it’s way into the quality and elegance of the finished wines.

The Manzano area is renowned for it’s unique chalky soils that the locals call ‘Ponca’ – which is rich in micro elements and mineral salts – qualities which work their way into the finished wines, giving them an incomparable character. This ‘Ponca’ soil also helps give a constant humidity in the vineyard which prevents the vines from any dryness damage.

Throughout the viticulture and vinification processes at this winery I am impressed by the attention to detail shown with an emphasis on working with (not against) nature – with quality being the overriding point in all decision making.

The finished wines are, (unsurprisingly) feminine in nature, elegant and well balanced with that quality and attention to detail working their way through to the glass.

Ronchi Di Manzano Fruilano

This isn’t an adventurous white – it’s a simple but top quality dry white with good citrus fruit, some nuttiness and some minerality – but it’s the classiness and purity that sets it apart from basic whites. This is a top notch, classy and elegant cool climate white from northern Italy. Often mistaken for Sauvignon but with none of the aromas – just great fruit, nuttiness & minerality.

Ronchi Di Manzano Pinot Grigio

Although Friulano is more prolific in Friuli-Venezia – Giulia, it’s well known that this area’s climatic and soil conditions are perfect for bringing out the best in Pinot Grigio, in fact, many say that it’s this area that produces the best Pinot Grigio in Italy – and stylistically a million miles away from the bland, often tasteless one dimensional commercial styles that end up in the UK.

Ronchi Di Manzano Ramato Pinot Grigio Rosé

Quite Simply – AN AMAZING ROSE. Ramato is a winemaking style historically linked to Friuli and using Pinot Grigio grapes, known as ‘copper’ pinot grigio in this region -  due to the copper appearance and hue of the grape skins. When these grapes are crushed and the skins are allowed to spend time with the juice, a teasing, tactile texture and coppery hue results in this distinctive wine that is full-bodied and powerful, dry, fresh and balanced,  with lovely, summer, fruit salad flavours – and that elegance, classiness and purity that this winery exudes – must be the female influence?!

Also, this is one of the few rose’s in our range that will benefit from a bit of bottle maturity – so, if this summer doesn’t perk up – no worries keeping it for our next decent summer – whenever that may be??
