Producer
Back in 1988, three families decided to invest in a winery in Romania, starting with 650 hectares of slightly unloved vineyards and a rusty, once state-owned winery.
Yet Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, have turned the Cramele Recas Estate into the most successful winery in Romania. Recas are now recognised globally for their impressive scale and breadth of fascinating wines, including natural and orange wine from organic grapes. Despite the scale the emphasis is on making good wines that over-deliver, and as a result they’ve struck on a magic formula that has seen sales and demand boom. Vineyards are a combination of evolved plantings from 1447 and more recent planting, whilst the winery has seen significant investment and boasts state of the art facilities where innovation thrives. Recas are in every way a modern, dynamic winery, whose open minded approach and quality sets them apart … a winery you really can’t ignore.
Production
The winery has been fully fitted out with stainless steel, automatic temperature controlled tanks for fermenting and storing the wine. The primary vinification facility has been completely renewed with the best possible equipment for gently crushing, de stemming, pressing the grapes- in order to be able to maintain all the quality in the grapes. All of the grapes for this wine come from their own estate and are harvested early in the morning to avoid the heat which would otherwise cause the juice to become pink during fermentation.
The grapes were lightly crushed and then further cooled to 8°C before a gentle pressing in state of the art vacuum presses. Free run juice is separated from the heavier pressing and decanted into stainless steel temperature controlled tanks for 48 to 72 hours, until perfectly clarified. The clear juice is transferred to stainless steel fermenters and inoculate with selected yeast to begin fermentation which takes 3 weeks at 10°C. The wine is kept on fine lees until bottling.

Each case contains one bottle each of:
2023 Vinazza Garganega Pinot Grigio (Italy) - Now recognized as Garda DOC, this Garganega Pinot Grigio is chosen from premium vineyards situated between Lake Garda and Vicenza. The inclusion of Garganega lends a more distinctive and flavorful profile to the wine compared to many standard Pinot Grigios. Pair with grilled white fish, risotto, and light appetizers like prawn cocktail.
2023 False Bay Crystalline Chardonnay (South Africa)' Classy Chardonnay with flinty minerality and great purity and restraint. A citrus core with ripe apple, pear and delicate tropical notes, produces a wine with great poise. Extended time on the lees adds nutty and toasty notes. Intense yet delicate right through to the finish. Serve with roast chicken, pasta and creamy sauce or grilled tiger prawns.
2024 Le Petit Chat Malin Blanc (France) - A scrumptious Languedoc blend - one of our fine feline tipples which can be lapped up on its lonesome. Serve chilled with white meats, fish or simply lap it up on its lonesome. Some particularly good matches include baked chicken and apricots, coronation chicken and skate with caper and butter sauce.
2024 Da Vero Catarratto (Organic)(Italy) -"This packs in a lot for the price point. Immediately attractive concentrated citric aromas lead onto a full-flavoured palate. The citric fruit follows through and is joined with some ripe, rich, tropical fruits. Good acidity, good complexity & a long, lingering finish. Exceptional value - at entry level from Sicily. Organic & vegan approved is an added bonus. This really is a no-brainer - superb value." Alan's Personal Tasting Note
2024 Percheron Chenin Blanc Viognier (South Africa)- Plenty of joy in this delightful blend of old vine Chenin and young Viognier. Delicious with Grilled prawns with plenty of garlic and chilli, whole lemon sole fried in butter and also delicate freshwater fish dishes.
2023 Bellefontaine Sauvignon Blanc(France)- This wine possesses fine aromatics, pure citrus fruit expression fresh acidity, varietal character and above all, a persistent finish. Drink on its own, well chilled, or try with tapas -the racy acidity in the wine makes it a great match for seafood in particular - Boquerón's anchovies would be fantastic!
