"Alarmingly dark brown. Looked like liquid brown sugar in the glass. Initially the wine was firmly closed on the nose, so I let it rest for a minute. Gradually the bouquet opened up on notes of raisins and orange peel. I don't really know what I was expecting from this wine, but I must say I was shocked to learn how concentrated, intense, perfectly alive, and dizzying complex this wine was. With style and grace not really at the forefront, this wine was a powerhouse of intense flavours of raisins and prunes, mixed in the brown sugar. Yet, this wine was not diluted marmalade, it was structured and firm at the skeleton and perfectly mature for drinking with crème brulee. Wonderful". (97 Points).

1966 Climatic Conditions

Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.

Specifications

 Thanks to expressive fruit – but without excessive concentration – Château Bonnet's red wine is unquestionably charming. In fact, it is a benchmark in Bordeaux. The wine is best enjoyed on the young side, although the quality tannin ensures good ageing for several year. With its fresh red cherry notes, this wine makes a great pairing for grilled meats and cheese platters.

Production

Grapes come from clay-limestone hilltop vineyards of Grézillac in the Entre-deux-Mers. Aged 12 months in 20% new oak barrels.

Estate

Château de Rochemorin belonged in the 18th century to the philosopher, Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, author of the famous Persian Letters. The latter willingly became the ambassador of Rochemorin red wines to his friends, men of letters and other notables, during his numerous trips to Europe, never forgetting to praise the beautiful complexity and the mineral notes on the nose and on the palate balanced and fine, their melted and fine tannins in the finish make them a sure value of the appellation.

The vines of Château de Rochemorin which give rise to this Pessac-Léognan red occupy no less than 87 hectares on a gravel terroir typical of the appellation. Two grape varieties are represented: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, from vines with an average age of 20 years. The result is a very fruity, velvety, rich wine, with well-balanced tannins.

This vast vineyard is harvested by hand and machine with mechanical sorting for plot vinification in thermoregulated stainless steel vats, before aging for 12 months in barrels comprising 30 to 40% new wood.

The release of the Villages tier represents a huge step in the broader understanding of the wonderfully diverse  Yarra Valley. For years, the Yarra has been represented by both single vineyard wines and broader blends across the whole region. Mac has long held the view that with experience and curiosity, numerous sub-regions will grow in clarity and distinction.  2019 is our first release of the Villages wines and reflects our growing love and understanding of such an exceptional region.

Mac has chosen not to provide traditional tasting notes for any of his wines. His aim is that his wines hopefully capture vineyard life and vitality. As such the wines are constantly evolving. He believes that the only tasting notes that matter are yours!

The Vineyard

Sitting behind the Waramate hills, this area encompasses both red volcanic and grey loam soils making it slightly more complicated to pinpoint a clear identity of this subregion. The undulating hills provide protection from the drier winds, the rainfall is slightly higher and the perfume, weight and structure appears more dense and effortless, pulling through seamlessly to the back palate. 

The Vintage

The 2019 growing season was warm and dry. Below average rainfall and warmer conditions placed huge demands on the plants. Thankfully, in early February the vines welcomed two  weeks of cool days and nights returning freshness and vigour. Overall small bunches and small berries characterised the season with above average structure and fruit weight. 

The Wine

The Woori Yallock epitomises Mac's passion for exploring the sub-regions and special sites of the Yarra Valley. To Mac, Pinot Noir is just a vehicle with which to express the vineyard, not the other way around.

As he said to us, "we as Aussie producers tend to get sucked into trying to emulate great French Pinot." He believes that "if you don’t care what it ends up as, but rather just expressing that site and the season", you're going to make better, more expressive wines.

Of all the vineyards he works with, this is the one Mac speaks of the most. The wines are richly fruited but highly structural, and very long lived.

In terms of characterful, story-telling Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, it really doesn't get much better.

Introducing Fattorie dei Dolfi

Born from ancient family vineyards and the infectious passion of a career-change winemaker, Fattorie dei Dolfi is a relatively young estate with a remarkably bright future. Giovanni Dolfi initially pursued a very successful career as a horse trainer during which he had the opportunity to meet the Queen Mother and began working for Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta, the owner of the legendary Tenuta San Guido which produces Sassicaia.

Through this connection he was introduced to the estate’s winemaker, Giacomo Tachis, who is regarded as the father of Sassicaia and was named Decanter’s Man of the Year in 2011. From then on Giovanni’s fate was sealed and it was only a matter of time before he and Giacomo began exploring how to unlock the potential of his family’s century-old vineyards close to the city of Pisa.

Oeno Director and Co-founder Daniel Carnio describes Giovanni’s project as “a small paradise” thanks to his relentless commitment to quality in his vineyards. Most of Fattorie dei Dolfi’s plots are surrounded by woodland which helps to shield the vines from contamination from other forms of agriculture and preserves a high degree of biodiversity. As well as creating a very low incidence of disease, this also means the estate does not need to use any chemicals on the vines. In keeping with the links to DRC, the Bianco Per Amore is very Burgundian in nature. Shiny staw yellow and bright in colour. Creamy character, with sizzled acidity. Hints of toast come through. The finish is stoney.

L'Bruno de' Venti

The  story  is  told  that  many  years  ago, the  woods  surrounding  this vineyard were  the  refuge  of  a  dark  skinned reclusive  with  piercing  eyes, very  attractive  to  women. He  lived  by  poaching  game and  doing  whatever  he could. No  one  knew  exactly  where he  lived,  but  from  time  to  time he  appeared  near  Poggio  ai  Venti vineyard,  and  so  the  people hereabouts  called  him “’l  Bruno de’  Venti ” (the  Dark  Fellow  of  the  Winds).

‘L Bruno De’ Venti is a Bordeaux blend. Dark currents pervade with a muscular back bone. Pure of fruit, the tannins are well rounded. Merlot vines from massal selection or between 50-70 years old. Cabernet Franc vines from massal selection of old vines.

Very fragrant and rich with intense notes of cherry, plums and hints of toasted spices.

The myth says that Imeneus, offspring of Aphrodite and Bacchus, was a young Athenian of modest social standing but of extraordinary beauty. ​He fell in love with a  young noble girl. While she was travelling to Eleusis, she was captured by pirates with her handmaids; among them was also  Imeneus,  who was mistaken for a  girl. While the captors were sleeping, he slew them all and brought the girls back safe to Athens. For his courageous deed,  he was awarded the hand of his beloved. For this reason, the ancient Greeks invoked Imeneus as a bringer of happiness in marriage.

The new icon of the Arizu family was presented during the celebrations of its 120 years. Although the name is inspired by his Finca El Paraíso de Maipú, it is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon conceived by the oenologist Pablo Cúneo from a selection of the best grapes from his own different vineyards. Violet red, bright and deep.

Nose

Its aromas are intense, balanced and elegant, with a very precise and complex fruity expression at the same time. Its delicate perfumes are reminiscent of red fruits and spices.

Mouth

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested manually, then a selection of bunches is carried out; and destemmed. The must is cold macerated for 5 days at a temperature of 8°C to 10°C, and a percentage of the Malbec undergoes carbonic maceration.

Then the Malbec is fermented in small stainless steel tanks for 10 days at a temperature between 24-28°C, with constant extraction work, such as stamping and delestage, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented in roller fermenters.

After the alcoholic fermentation, a post-fermentative maceration is carried out.

History

Established by Leoncio Arizu in 1926, Finca El Paraíso is the oldest, most extensive estate with the greatest variety of vine varieties implanted in Bodega Luigi Bosca. There, among its vineyards, stands the château-style mansion in which different generations of the Arizu family lived. Its walls and its imprint are also part of the history, present and future of Bodega Luigi Bosca. Finca El Paraíso wines are characterized by their roundness, their elegance and their tense and sober body.

Colour

The colour is intense and deep dark red.

Nose

A wide aromatic palette that takes us between fruity (raspberry, strawberry), mineral (graphite, charcoal) and floral (faded rose) notes.

Palate

The palate is just as complex, with a nice persistence of woody and spicy notes. The structure is worthy of the greatest wines of the Côte de Beaune.

Origin

The Corton vineyard is located north of the Côte de Beaune on the hill of Corton and extends over 3 municipalities: Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton, and Ladoix-Serrigny. The Climat "Les Renardes" is located in the middle of the hillside, on the edge of the village of Ladoix-Serrigny. Corton is the only red Grand Cru in the Côte de Beaune.

Vinification

Traditional vinification in thermos-regulated stainless steel vats on a 3 weeks period: Cold pre-fermentation maceration around 8 ° C. Pigeages and pumping over to extract colour and structure. Fermentation with a peak temperature around 30 ° C. Post-fermentation maceration at 25 ° C. Ageing between 8 to 16 months with malolactic fermentation to gain roundness. 70 à 80% de fût neuf.

Soil

Gently sloping reddish and stony soil, calcareous brown, rich in marl with a high potash content. It offers Pinot Noir its full development.

Bin 707 is Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Grange equivalent: ripe, intensely-flavoured fruit; completing fermentation and matured in new American oak; and expressing the Penfolds' policy of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit-sourcing.

Named by an exQantas marketing man, Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 (when the focus shifted to Bin 389) nor in 1981, 1995 or 2000 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full bodied and with good cellaring potential, Bin 707 has a secure place among the ranks of Australia's finest Cabernets. Packaged in laser-etched bottles from the 1997 vintage.

An immediate, intense lift of pure ripe blackcurrant fruit, laced with mint and the faintest suggestion of violet. Cigar box and fresh tobacco oak notes showcase the sheer fruit quality. Although youthful, the nose already shows true 707 character.

Palate

Powerful and complete. Saturated fruits have soaked up the new oak culminating in a rich, sweet mid-palate and long stylish finish. The depth of fruit and defined structure, coupled with obvious muscular tannins, suggest that this wine is built for the long haul.

Vintage Conditions

Good winter rains gave South Australian regions a solid start to the growing season. Fruit set was excellent and careful vineyard management to reduce crop loads ensured the vines were in good shape to continue ripening throughout the season. Summer rains brought relief and the ensuing fine conditions towards vintage resulted in fruit reaching full ripeness and was picked in optimal condition.

Bin 707 is Penfolds' Cabernet Sauvignon version of Grange: ripe, intensely flavoured fruit; completing fermentation and maturation in new oak; fully expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Named by an ex-Qantas marketer, Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 when fruit was directed to other wines, nor in 1981, 1995, 2000 or 2003 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full-bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 has a secure place among the ranks of Australia's finest Cabernets.

Tasting Notes

Colour 

Dense, deep-red, with a dark purple / black core.

Nose

Brooding, with a selective & slow aromatic release - firstly wafts of black olive (tapenade), then the faintest suggestion of sardine/anchovy - or maybe soy / Worcestershire - or could it be...? More confidently, familial barrel-ferment, cedary oak, and formic notes share the stage with blackcurrant & blackberry fruits. Inviting, tempting.

Palate

Cassis/blackcurrant varietal fruits and savoury oak stake an immediate (style) claim. Sarsaparilla and choco-mint flavours mould together to create the next layer, followed by a more savoury (Chinese mushroom/oyster sauce mix) immersion structurally impregnating any layering. Gripping tannins complete the offer.

Ripe red berries together with varietal, leafy cassis fruits. Stylish integrated oak, hints of smokiness and subtle cedar aromas.

Rich and ripe with dark cherry and raspberry fruit flavours, some dark chocolate and integrated smoky oak.
