Tasting Notes

Lightly pétulant- subtly refreshing, soft and fragrant. Each bottle is hand filled and capped, and still has the fine lees contained within, much like bottle-conditioned craft beers.

Naturally cloudy and lightly sparkling Malvasia Bianca. Aromas of lime, green apple, sour grapefruit, pear and wild flowers (frangipani, honeysuckle, and nectarine blossom).

2020 Birichino Petulant Naturel Malvasia Bianca

Vineyard

From a vineyard planted just shy of 3 decades ago up against the Santa Lucias of the Salinas Valley, the 2020 is 100% Malvasia Bianca with just a touch of malvasia juice that was added while it was actively fermenting.

Producer

Located on the southern edge of California wine country, Birichino Winery was founded in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke, two Bonny Doon alumni. Their name, Birichino (Biri-keeno), literally meaning “naughty” or “mischievous” in Italian, is a riff on the old locksmith trick of adding AAA to the beginning of their names to jump to the beginning of the phone book. Their focus is making harmonious wines, sourcing fruit from old Santa Cruz vineyards to produce food-friendly wines higher in acid and lower in alcohol.

The winemakers put emphasis on the grape varieties they feel most naturally appeal to the senses, Krause and Locke create effortlessly pleasurable wines that focus on balance over power. Approachable in both style and price, these wines are comfortable on any dinner table or picnic blanket.

Accolades

91 points Wine Enthusiast "From 31-year-old vines, this bubbly is all kinds of wild, starting with a very cloudy appearance then leading into aromas of grapefruit soda, apple sauce and banana. That unique combination shows strongly on the palate as well, where tropical hints of mango and makrut lime add to the attention-grabbing format. " (MK)
